Oregon Coast

Last month we took a family vacation to the Oregon coast.  Yes, that was last month and I've been a little slow getting all 1,000 plus photos downloaded from our camera.  Don't worry, I won't post them all.  We were there for 5 days, so I'm breaking this blog post up so I can post a little at a time.  But you should still prepare yourself for the LONGEST BLOG POST EVER.  I feel like I've been working on this for days!

DAY ONE:
We left Genesee with our truck packed up with all the baby food, diapers, and toys that we could fit!  We did our research and decided on a few cities and a few activities we wanted to fit in during our trip and decided to travel down the coast little by little so we could see all the sites.

Our 1st stop was Multnomah Falls just outside of Portland.  This was about a 51/2 or 6 hour drive.  The last hour of the drive was beautiful!  Everything was green and beautiful.  We've seen lots of photos of this waterfall and had to stop to get some of our own!

Can you see that guy standing on the bridge?  Right in the middle of my photo!
It's Aaron and the girls!  It was a short 2 minute hike up to the bridge, but Aaron was pretty out of air on his way back down.  A guy about his age offered to help and said "I know how it is, I have twins too!"

This is the view from the top, we're standing on the bridge.

After Multnomah Falls, we drove into Portland and stopped at a "food cart pod" for dinner.  Aaron had an Egyptian Gyro and kept saying "Those were real Egyptians.  They had turbans on while they were cooking!"  And I got some yummy Indian food.  It was raining lightly in Portland, but we were lucky that that was the only rain our whole trip!

We finally got to our hotel and had to laugh because it was so terrible.  It was not in the best neighborhood and we could hear a public transport train that ran all night long.  Man, $100 doesn't buy you much in a big city these days!

DAY TWO:
But we made up for it by getting up the next morning for a walk around Portland.  It's said to be very bike-friendly, so we took our stroller along a bike commuter path.  This photo was from the floating dock walkway.  We didn't realize it was moving until we stopped to get this photo.  It swayed with the water so much it made us a bit tipsy!

We continued along the Willamette River and over the bridge into the downtown area to get some famous Voodoo Donuts for breakfast.

 Here were some we loved:
Peanut butter, chocolate, and Rice Krispies
the Voodoo man: raspberry filled with a pretzel stake in his heart
McMinville Cream & Portland Cream: the ones with eyes & mustaches
There was one with orange sprinkles and orange tang on top, it had a sour kick!

It's a good thing we took that hour long walk - had to burn off those donut calories!

After packing up our stuff and heading out on the road again, we drove  northwest toward Seaside.  At first it threw Aaron off that he couldn't pump his own gas, but by the end of the trip he said, "Hey, this is actually pretty nice!"

In Seaside we rode the carosel, checked out some shops, and walked the "promenade," which turned out to be very windy.  But it was exciting to finally see the ocean after all that driving!

Both girls loved the carosel.  Maria would kept bouncing after the ride stopped, and Elaina was waving at people.  There was a group of old ladies that stopped to watch and giggled everytime Elaina would wave or smile at them.

Here's a quick video:

Our next stop was Ecola State Park, which was a picnic area with beautiful views of the beach and ocean below.  This was our "get our energy out" stop.

This trip turned out to be the perfect time for our girls.  They can walk pretty well now and they had so much fun running around and exploring at every stop.

From Seaside to Ecola to Cannon Beach it was only a 20 minute drive total so the girls never got a chance to nap.  So by the time we made it to Cannon Beach to see Haystack Rock, they were more than ready for some sleep!  I stayed in the truck with them while they slept (okay, I may have had a nap as well...) and Aaron went to be photographer.  He did a great job, in fact, I think he took most of our really great photos from this trip.

TO BE CONTINUED...
(that's right, we only made it to the middle of day 2... stay tuned!)
